WASHINGTON, Nov. 30 (UPI) --A new study suggests that the heart rate and heart rate at rest and after exercise might be lowered by diuretics like Lasix.

The findings, published Tuesday in the journal Circulation, are the first of their kind. They found that diuretics can slow the rate of heart rate in patients with heart failure.

"These diuretics can also be used in the treatment of patients with chronic heart failure," Dr. Douglas H. Siegel, director of cardiology at George Washington University's Department of Cardiology, told TODAY. "They may be used to treat patients who have left ventricular hypertrophy."

The diuretic drugs are designed to increase the urine output by more than 40 percent.

But their use is not always clinically proven and may have a significant side effect.

Dr. H. C. Stuckman, the lead author of the study, said the study was designed to measure the effects of diuretics on patients at high risk of heart failure and to compare them with other options. "It's important to consider the potential for side effects," he said.

"The heart is an organ that we all work through. When you are at a high risk of heart failure, it can be difficult to get a diagnosis and to treat patients effectively. The heart and the liver can be the two major organs involved in the process."

Siegel added that the researchers were able to identify diuretics that actually improve heart function and, if necessary, prevent a drop in the heart rate.

The diuretic drugs are approved for use in patients with heart failure and are only recommended for use in patients with heart failure, he said. The drugs also can be prescribed to people with congestive heart failure, but not to patients with heart failure and have not been proven to be safe.

"Our findings have important implications for patients with heart failure who will need a different way of treating their heart failure," he said.

In addition, Siegel said the study has some limitations.

The study's authors did not state how many people died. However, they noted that some people died in the study, as did others.

About 50,000 people with heart failure die each year from congestive heart failure, and more than 12,000 are hospitalized each year in the United States.

Siegel said the study was designed to investigate how diuretics work in patients with heart failure, a condition in which the heart is less able to pump and the heart becomes more resistant.

"That means we can't say that diuretics work in the heart and not in the liver. It's a different story," he said. "But it's important to keep in mind that it may be very effective for patients with heart failure and that it may be used in other cases."

But he added that the study may be flawed because it is not a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial and that there are other confounding factors that could have played a role in the findings.

David C. Breen, an endocrinologist and cardiologist at the University of Cincinnati who studies heart failure, told TODAY. "We do not know for sure that diuretics work. But they can interact with some medications and have a negative effect on the heart," he said.

Breen also noted that patients should be aware of the risks of their medication and the importance of keeping them on a regular schedule.
